Craft gives impetus at Rotte

Debate with representatives from schools, politics, administration, companies and craft organizations from OWL

Under the motto "Crafts provide impetus", the Chamber of Crafts East Westphalia-Lippe in Bielefeld invited guests to an exchange of information at Rotte. Together with Chamber President Peter Eul, Chief Executive Officer Dr. Jens Prager and other representatives of the skilled crafts organization, the guests from politics, business, schools and administration discussed the transformation of the skilled crafts sector in times of increasing automation and digitalization. During a joint breakfast, however, the focus of the discussion was on the issue of a shortage of young talent and skilled workers. Chamber President Eul is convinced that the shortage of skilled workers is "one of the greatest challenges facing German politics and the economy." Above all, he says, there needs to be a jolt through education policy to restore real appreciation for vocational training.

Valuable exchange

In the honest and open discussion, it became clear that contact between young people and companies needed to be significantly intensified. Parents also had to be brought on board in order to reduce the prevailing reservations about vocational training and to demonstrate the good career opportunities within the skilled trades. The panel also discussed specific possible programs to initiate change. One idea that was brought up for discussion was closer cooperation in school workshops. Lothar Schlegel, principal of the Friedrich-Spee comprehensive school in Paderborn, would also welcome this. He confirms that students lack contacts with companies. "The requirements in the curriculum make it almost impossible for us to allow students to get a taste of companies during class time. We schools need more freedom for such programs." Possible AGs, which would offer the pupils regular contact with the company, would reduce the existing "threshold fear" before entering working life.

The "Handwerk gibt Impulse" event showed how important it is to bring the most diverse stakeholders around the shortage of young talent and skilled workers to the table and develop concrete measures. Only if all the stakeholders involved pull together can this negative development be countered, despite and with demographic change.
